At Your New Job There may have been any number of details large and small that you and your new employer may have neglected to discuss prior to your accepting your new position. In the lead-up to your start date, be sure to have all your questions answered, either by the Human Resources department or directly with your hiring manager. These could involve things like health insurance details, job details, relocation issues, or a million other points. Try your best to cover all the key points before you start your new job. Once at your new job, there also will be all sorts of new things and people to adjust to. Any job change entails a potential risk, but by being alert and addressing your observations and concerns early can help minimize your risk in your career move. When you take a new job you may be shocked about something as minor as how parking spaces are assigned or you may feel a supervisor or colleague has business notions that are very different from your own. Sometimes these differences seem big when one starts a job. Sometimes they seem all out of proportion due to one's limited career experiences. Sometimes employers have communications styles which are quite different from what one is accustomed to, and that could lead to misunderstandings. The general advisory that we have regarding starting a new job is to observe, observe and observe. Be careful with your comments or gossip to new colleagues, because criticism of one person might turn out to be criticism of that person's best friend! First
concentrate on getting your job done well and to your
satisfaction. The best stance is to be confident in your abilities to do a great job, while also being humble enough to know that the world is a big place and the only people who know it all are, well, know-it-alls. For the rest of us mortals, every day is a new learning experience and an opportunity find good and to bring good to those around us.
